Mission:  To create an environment where it’s easy to walk and bike for recreation and transportation; and to educate and encourage citizens to be active.

The Walkable Communities Task Force currently works and manages all areas of Project U-Turn. The Task Force meets the second Tuesday of each month to discuss developments to Project U-Turn programs and brainstorm new ideas to promote walking and biking in Jackson. Next Meeting: February 12, 2008 12 noon. Pedal and Tour Building, 225 N Jackson Street. Second Floor. Call 990-9798.

WHAT IS A WALKABLE COMMUNITY?
Communities that incorporate the principles of pedestrian-oriented development. Places that locate within an easy and safe walk goods (such as housing, offices, and retail) and services (such as transportation, schools, libraries) that a community resident or employee needs on a regular basis. Walkable neighborhoods are characterized by mixed land uses, compact building, inviting pedestrian corridors, and a streetscape that better serves a range of users -- pedestrians, bicyclists, transit riders, and automobiles. Walkable neighborhoods allow persons substitute walking, bicycling or other non-auto modes for short trips, thus contributing to reduced congestion and better air quality.
