Method of Travel by Location

Across all locations and time periods, 55% of active travelers used walking and 39% used biking around town. Percentage of walking and biking varied for each location in town. Franklin/West was the only location with a higher percentage of bicyclers than pedestrians. A break-down for each location is provided in Appendix D: Method of Travel by Location.

Method of Travel by Time

Each mode of travel differed by time. The amount of time for each “time period” was unequal. The morning time period was two and a half hours from 7-9:30 am. The noon time period was three hours from 11-2 pm. The evening time period was two hours from 4:30-6:30 pm. Time periods were chosen based on expected use and not based equally. In order to directly compare the time periods number of people was converted to number of people per hour. Walking increased throughout the day. Biking spiked mid-day, but was almost equal in morning and evening. Jogging was slightly higher in the morning and noon time periods. A graph of each location is available in Appendix E: Method of Travel by Time.

Method of Travel by Age and Gender

Volunteers also recorded age in broad categories 1) under 20, 2) 20-40, and 3) 40 and over. Broad categories helped decrease error among different volunteers. If a volunteer was unable to estimate the age the volunteer was instructed to leave the question blank. Biking was the mode of choice for those under 20 while walking was preferred by adults over 20. Throughout the city more males were seen using active transportation than females.
