The Smart Commute Continues!
The cool summer may not be great for beach vacations, but it has made for some wonderful Smart Commutes! Despite the rain that cancelled our Falling Waters Trail Group Commute, we have enjoyed biking around town almost every day this summer.  Cool mornings make for an especially nice way to wake up on the way to work.
Lunch runs, meetings, and even non-work events downtown (Cruise Nights) are great destinations for biking and walking, and temps in the mid-seventies make it easier to try for the first time.  Even on warmer days, setting a moderate pace will keep you from overheating.  Try parking and walking a short distance first.  You don't have to cover marathon distances to benefit from being active.
Even when it rains on your parade, you can continue the Smart Commute.  Walking with an umbrella and comfortable shoes (carry your pumps in a plastic bag) allows you to enjoy the wet weather.  If you ride a bike to work, fenders are your friend.  Most of the water that hits bikers comes up from the road, not down from the sky.  Good fenders will proect you from the rain and mud that your tires throw up from the street.
Whatever the weather, there is a Smart Commute option that will work for you.  This month we have some great Smart Commute events.  Plan ahead for the weather and join us for a paddle to work or a trip to the movies!

Enjoy the ride!

July 17  Paddle to Work!
Looking to add a little adventure into your trip to work?
Want to get a duck's eye view of Jackson?
Seeking a good time with fellow Smart Commuters?
Then sign up now to see Jackson wake up as we paddle the Grand River into town.  July's group commute takes you out of the driver's seat and puts a paddle in your hand!  We will meet at the High St. bridge near Alro Steel at 7:30am for a 40 minute canoe and kayak trip into downtown Jackson.  Group Commutes are a lot of fun, and with the assistance of the Grand River Environmental Action Team (GREAT), this one is guarenteed to make you smile!
You can bring your own boat or ride with us.  Either way, please contact us at info@fitnesscouncil.org to sign up because space is limited.
More info and a map is available at http://www.fitnesscouncil.org/eventcalendar.html#faq5

July 17  Smart Commute to the Movies!
Doors open at 6:00pm, movie rolls at 6:30pm
Getting there can be even more than half the fun!  We invite all Smart Commuters and their friends to bike, walk, or bus to the Michigan Theater for a free movie.  Grab an early dinner at one of the many great restaurants downtown, then cruise around town on your bike or stroll past the downtown shops on your way to the theater.
On Friday, July 17, we are showing “WooLife: One life saved by the game of baseball.”  This documentary about the legendary Cub fan, Ronnie “Woo Woo” Wickers, is a testimony that the human spirit can overcome and conquer the grimmest of circumstances, simply by recognizing the gift of being alive and the passion of truly believing in something.
What does that have to do with Smart Commuting? Nothing! Instead of watching a movie about walking and biking, we will actually make a trip to or through downtown by foot or bike.  Then we’ll enjoy a great movie together!
Try out the valet bike parking and pedal a fruit smoothie on the Blender Bike at the theater, too!

Seeking Smart Commute Stories
We've seen a lot of people biking and walking around town over the last month, many of whom look to be headed to work.  Every time we see a breifcase on a bike or a well-dressed walker, we wonder what the story is behind their trip to work.
In order to find out more about the people behind the commute, we are doing a prize drawing everyone who sends in a Smart Commute story this week.  Tell us how you get to work, and how Smart Commuting changes your routine.  Have you noticed anything new about your neighborhood or discovered difficulties?  We're interested in how you are making Smart Commuting work for you.  We also want to hear how it has all gone wrong.  Stories about Smart Commutes turned dumb will get double points!
Send you Smart Commute stories (or even your "why I quit Smart Commuting" essays) to info@fitnesscouncil.org  to be entered in a drawing for bike shop gift certificates and Hot Air Jubilee tickets!

Track your Commute!
We want to know how Smart Commute changed your trip to work!  The easiest way to let us know is to track your Smart Commutes.  Over forty people have already recorded Smart Commute trips in June.  We are sure there are more of you out there, so please prove it by tracking your trips to work.
It only takes a minute for any Smart Commuter to sign in and record your Smart Commute trips for the week.  You can contact your team leader for information on how to sign in.   Even if you are not on a team, you can still record your commutes and help us measure the impact of the Smart Commute program.  And of course we have prize drawings that are based on tracking your Smart Commutes!
