What is Smart Commute Day?

Smart Commute Day is a community-wide event encouraging everyone to try a healthier, greener, and cheaper way to get to work.  On May 16, hundreds of employees in Jackson will walk, bike or ride transit on their morning commute. Join us and find out how much fun it can be to commute smarter! Everyone who registers and participates receives a prize bag including a Smart Commute Day t-shirt.

How do I participate?

The simple answer is that you walk, bike, or take the bus to work.  However, on May 16 we have lots of events to add a little fun to your morning commute.

Join the Corporate Challenge
Compete with similarly sized businesses to see which company can get the most employees to join the Smart Commute.  Winners are announce at the Smart Commute lunch party and carry the Smart Commute trophy and bragging rights for a year! Register your team now

Park and walk from a breakfast station
This is a great option for those who live too far from work to walk or bike the whole distance.  Drop your car off at either Nixon Park or Ella Sharp Park.  Then grab a quick breakfast and walk or bike the rest of the way to work.  From the lunch party you can take a JTA bus back to your car.  We will also have a breakfast station at P&T Fitness for those who would like to meet up for coffee and a bagel on their downtown walk.

Join the Falling Water Trail commute

It started with a challenge between friends and has grown into a community ride.  The Falling Water Trail opened last fall and is already widely acknowledged as a great community asset.  Join a group of commuters who will ride in from Concord.  Ride from Concord at 7:30am or meet up with the group where the trail crosses Lime Lake at around 8:00am.  The trail is beautiful in the morning.  This could be your best commute of the year!

Smart Commute lunch party
This year we are providing lunch for all the Smart Commute participants at Bucky Harris Park (corner of W. Michigan and Jackson).  Stop by for a sandwich and find out more about your commuting options.  We will announce the winners of the Corporate Challenge as well as other awards and drawings.  You can also catch a ride back to the park-and-walk breakfast stations on a JTA bus.

“I was very glad to see this happen. I live in the City and have been wanting to either bike or walk to work but was not sure of how safe it would be. Being able to walk with other people helped me to see how much I enjoyed it and showed me a direct/safe route to go.” -2005 participant

“I like the whole idea of smart commute…being able to park a short ways away from work and walk the rest of way worked very well for me…I was able to get some exercise but was still able to get my son to day care and so forth without a problem.
-2006 participant
