 Walking School Bus

The Safe Routes to School team has been working hard to improve the health of Jackson’s children by making it safer to walk and bike to school.

What’s 1,254 equal? That’s the number of Jackson students who walked to school on International Walk to School Day! Students from Northeast, Cascades, Frost Elementary schools as well as Jackson Arts and Technology Academy walked to school for fitness and fun. Walking to School is one great way to fulfill the sixty minutes of physical activity recommended for children older than kindergarten age.

Walk to School Day  included the Jackson High School Band, Jackson High athletes and National Honor Society members, Jackson Arts and Tech Jaguar mascots and lots of fun. The event served as a great kick-off for walking to school everyday. To find out more about Safe Route to School and how your child can be involved

Conduct a Walking Audit
The Safe Routes to School team held a walking audit to identify hazards to walking and biking in the Frost neighborhood. The team found areas without sidewalks or crosswalks among other hazards like loose dogs and large bushes overhanging the sidewalk.

Make it safer to walk and bike
The team worked to install 12 new crosswalks, 2 new no turn on red signs, and make changes to the parking lot. The team continues to work on improvements.

Hold a kick-off event
October 6, Frost School celebrated International Walk to School Day. Approximately 600 Frost students, parents, dignitaries and volunteers walked to school.

Continue ongoing activities
The team is planning ongoing activity like Walking Wednesdays and bike safety classes to encourage kids to walk and bike to school.
