Try Walking to School this year!
Walking to school is a great way to be healthy and its a fun way to get school everyday. Several JPS schools (Frost, Cascades, Northeast, Wilson, and McCulloch) have started Safe Routes to School programs to make it even safer for their students to walk to school. Safe Routes to School helps improve safety in the area and encourages students living close to the school to walk or bike to school. If you'd like to start Safe Routes to School at your school please contact Linda Meeder at 841-2283.

News!
All JPS students are invited to participate in International Walk to School Day  Contact Scott at 990-9798 or info@fitnesscouncil.org if you'd like to plan an event for your school.

How does Safe Routes to School work?

Safe Routes to School Process: Example Frost Elementary

Conduct a Walking Audit
The Safe Routes to School team held a walking audit to identify hazards to walking and biking in the Frost neighborhood. The team found areas without sidewalks or crosswalks among other hazards like loose dogs and large bushes overhanging the sidewalk.

Make it safer to walk and bike
The team worked to install 12 new crosswalks, 2 new no turn on red signs, and make changes to the parking lot. The team continues to work on improvements.

Hold a kick-off event
October 6, Frost School celebrated International Walk to School Day. Approximately 600 Frost students, parents, dignitaries and volunteers walked to school.

Continue ongoing activities
The team is planning ongoing activity like Walking Wednesdays and bike safety classes to encourage kids to walk and bike to school.
