International Walk to School Day
The weather didn't cooperate this year, but we still had dozens of students who laced up their walking shoes and joined other students from Jackson, England, and Australia to celebrate International Walk to School Day. After walking with their friends from home students were greeted at the school and received a sticker and backpack reflector. After walking with their friends from home students were greeted at the school by the Jackson High School drumline keeping the beat as the students filed into school.

Walking School Bus Leaders Needed! Interested in leading a walking school bus a couple times a week this fall? It is a great way to spend time with your children and get some extra exercise. Contact Scott at 990-9798 or email him at info@fitnesscouncil.org.

Winter snow shovel audit In an effort to keep the walkways clear in winter, fifth and sixth graders walked the neighborhood thanking neighbors for shoveling their walks and keeping kids from choosing the street instead of a snowy sidewalk.

What is a walking school bus?
A walking school bus works almost like a normal school bus. An adult starts at the beginning of the way to school and walks to school picking up kids for the bus as she walks. Students have fun walking together and an adult is always present to help cross traffic.

Five Reasons to Start a Walking School Bus with Your Neighbors:
1. Exercise The walking bus provides a chance for everyone to take part in regular exercise. Evidence shows that more active children are likely to become more active adults.

2. Safety Children who walk to school on a walking bus are part of a large and visible group supervised by adults and seen safely into school. This reassures parents who are concerned about their children walking on their own.

3. Road Sense The walking bus helps children learn pedestrian skills so that when they begin to walk on their own they are better equipped to deal with traffic.

4. Socializing The journey to school gives children a chance to talk and make new friends, when they've arrived at school they've done their chatting and are more ready to learn.

5. Environment Every journey made on foot helps reduce the amount of traffic around schools, which will help reduce air pollution and improve our local environment for everyone.
