News!

The weather didn't cooperate this year, but we still had dozens of students who laced up their walking shoes and joined other students from Jackson, England, and Australia to celebrate International Walk to School Day. Join us next year!

McCulloch parents and staff conduct walking audit. Last May a group of parents, McCulloch staff, and the Assistant City Engineer walked the neighborhood around McCulloch looking for things that need to be improved to make it safer to walk to school. A highlight of the day was the entire school enjoying the beautiful day and joining in the walk. Everyone had a blast!

The group found things like incomplete sidewalks....

How does Safe Routes to School work?

Safe Routes to School Process: Example Frost Elementary

Conduct a Walking Audit
The Safe Routes to School team held a walking audit to identify hazards to walking and biking in the Frost neighborhood. The team found areas without sidewalks or crosswalks among other hazards like loose dogs and large bushes overhanging the sidewalk.

Make it safer to walk and bike
The team worked to install 12 new crosswalks, 2 new no turn on red signs, and make changes to the parking lot. The team continues to work on improvements.

Hold a kick-off event
October 6, Frost School celebrated International Walk to School Day. Approximately 600 Frost students, parents, dignitaries and volunteers walked to school.

Continue ongoing activities
The team is planning ongoing activity like Walking Wednesdays and bike safety classes to encourage kids to walk and bike to school.
