News!
George Long submits SR2S grant Along with the Village of Grass Lake the school submitted a grant to continue the SR2S program and improve safety with several new crosswalks and sidewalk sections.

Walking Wednesdays continue on good weather days! This year we will have an adult led walking school bus every Wednesday, meeting at the Grass Lake United Methodist Church. Call the school for details. Many George Long students joined a Walking School Bus last year and had a great time getting to school the healthy way.

International Walk to School Day 2006 was Wed., October 4th--More information! Although the weather wasn't ideal, George Long students participated in International Walk to School Day 2006 on Wednesday October 4th.

Walking Audit In March 2006, a group of teachers, parents, and village officials walked the neighborhood around George Long looking for areas that need to be improved to make it safer to walk to school. The village is considering the requests for new crosswalks and improved intersections. Based on the walk the group picked the best routes to school as shown in this map.

What is a walking school bus?
A walking school bus works almost like a normal school bus. An adult starts at the beginning of the way to school and walks to school picking up kids for the bus as she walks. Students have fun walking together and an adult is always present to help cross traffic.

Five Reasons to Start a Walking School Bus with Your Neighbors:
1. Exercise The walking bus provides a chance for everyone to take part in regular exercise. Evidence shows that more active children are likely to become more active adults.

2. Safety Children who walk to school on a walking bus are part of a large and visible group supervised by adults and seen safely into school. This reassures parents who are concerned about their children walking on their own.

3. Road Sense The walking bus helps children learn pedestrian skills so that when they begin to walk on their own they are better equipped to deal with traffic.

4. Socializing The journey to school gives children a chance to talk and make new friends, when they've arrived at school they've done their chatting and are more ready to learn.

5. Environment Every journey made on foot helps reduce the amount of traffic around schools, which will help reduce air pollution and improve our local environment for everyone.
