In
2003, the city of Jackson was selected as one of 25 communities nationwide
to receive funds from the Active Living by Design organization. Active
Living by Design is a national program of The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation
and is a part of the UNC School of Public Health in Chapel Hill, North
Carolina. This program helps fund innovative programs that increase physical
activity through community design, public policies and communications
strategies. The 25 communities, including Jackson, have been funded $200,000
over five years to develop a collaboration among a variety of organizations in the community
ranging from public health to city planning to parks and recreation. The
Jackson project, titled Project U-turn, will contribute information about
how youth-lead programs can increase walking and biking trips.
